National Eat Your Veggie Day!

It is National Eat Your Veggie’s Day!  We know how hard it can be to get kids to eat their vegetables.  Here are some activities to get your child excited and explore new vegetables.

Vegetable Stamping is a preschool or kindergarten classroom favorite.  Exploration of new foods is not just tasting them, it is feeling their texture, their smells and their shapes.  This activity is a little messy, but kids will have a great time.  Take vegetables and slice them in half.  Peppers, celery, onions and potatoes work best for this activity.  Use paper plates to pour washable paint into and start stamping onto long white paper or construction paper.  It is a great activity for fine motor skills.  For little hands or ones that are having a hard time gripping the vegetable, take a fork and put one on each vegetable.  Happy stamping!

Another great activity for kids is to grow their own vegetables or plants.  Romaine lettuce can be regrown.  Take the ends of romaine head and plant it in dirt.  Water it daily and more leaves will grow.  This is a great way to show kids how plants grow with water, sunlight and soil.  This activity can be done with seeds as well.  Kids love to see how their tender love and care can take the seed and grow into a plant!

It’s okay to play with your food.  Why not give kids vegetables in different shapes and sizes and allow their imagination to run wild.  Cookie cutters are a great way to cut veggies or fruit into shapes.  And let’s be real we like to eat our veggies in cute shapes too!
